Luton Town came back from a goal down to carry off the League One championship in front of nearly 3,000 travelling fans.

Manager Mike Newell and his delighted players saluted their followers at the end of the match and there was no problem of a pitch invasion as the fans were kept well back in the visitor's stand.

It all might have gone wrong when Andy Holt headed Wrexham into the lead from Carlos Edwards' cross to the back post.

Dennis Lawrence nearly added a second but he headed narrowly wide from a Darren Ferguson free-kick.

Luton missed their first opening when Enoch Showunmi crossed and Rowan Vine shot past the left-hand post.

And when Peter Holmes set up another good opening from a corner, Ahmet Brkovic hit over from six yards.

It was a different story in the second half after Newell's pep talk transformed his players and they looked a different side.

Showunmi should have equalised straight after the restart but somehow mis-kicked only ten yards out and Ben Foster completed an easy save.

Kevin Nicholls was out of luck with a free-kick from the edge of the area that hit the Wrexham crossbar.

Curtis Davies eased the pressure on the champions elect with a superb header early in the second half, finishing off from Holmes' corner at the near post.

They should have had a second goal when substitute Warren Feeney crossed from the right to Steve Howard but the striker was way off target with a header at the back post.

Chris Coyne settled it with another flashing header just on the hour from a Nicholls free-kick.

It was all Luton now and Howard should have scored two more goals.

First he aimed a tame header straight at Foster when Holmes set him up and then he hit the post from a Brkovic lay-off.

The result leaves Wrexham facing near certain relegation with barely enough points left even if they win their remaining games.

They also face the problem of administration and an uncertain future as they wait for a definite takeover of the cash-strapped club.
