You should always expect the unexpected in football. Luton's Enoch Showunmi proved just that when he scored a stunning winning goal after looking the man least likely to score.

Moments before his goal, Showunmi had missed a second glorious chance when he completely missed the ball from three yards out.

Minutes later though Showunmi, who was playing Saturday football in the Middlesex league last season, scored his first ever league goal to give Luton a 1-0 win over Colchester United.

Colchester now have just one win in 11 games and they were left to rue missed chances in the first half when they looked the more dangerous team catching Luton on the break time and again.

In the fifth minute Colchester forward Craig Fagan turned the ball on to the inside of a post after Luton's debutant keeper Morten Hyldgaard failed to deal with a low cross.

Colchester continued to hit Luton on the break and they looked certain to score when Liam Chilvers shot inside a congested penalty area but Steve Robinson cleared off the line.

United were left to curse their luck once again when Kemal Izzet's header hit the crossbar after he latched onto an inch-perfect cross from Fagan.

Just before the end of the first half Showunmi missed a great chance when he was given too much room and he could only manage a weak effort.

Missing a further gilt-edged chance in the second half. Showunmi surprised everyone when he showed great composure in scoring the only goal of the game.

Showunmi picked the ball up on the edge of the area before calmly turning and slotting the ball into the net.

Colchester boss Phil Parkinson tried to attack more with 25 minutes to go by bringing on top scorer Wayne Andrews and Scott McGleish, but his side failed to create any more chances.
