Luton saw their play off hopes take another nose dive as Swindon romped to a comfortable 3-0 win at Kenilworth Road as they boosted their own chances of promotion next season.

The tone of the match was set after only three minutes when Swindon forged in front.

A hopeful punt into the Luton box from David Duke saw Andy Gurney's first-time volley crash off the underside of the bar, though Rory Fallon was on hand to head in the rebound.

Luton should have equalised when Emmerson Boyce headed Steve Robinson's free-kick wide before Swindon doubled their lead. Fallon superbly heading in Andy Nicholas' cross.

As the home side's frustration grew they had a strong penalty appeal turned down, but it was the visitors who finished the half stronger and scored the killer third goal on the stroke of half-time, Matt Hewlett taking advantage to coolly slot home from six yards out.

With the game all but over Swindon were playing with a confidence and attacking flair and were unfortunate not to add a fourth when Fallon came within inches of notching his hat-trick.

A swift counter attack saw Parkin release the striker and with only Morten Hyldgaard in the Luton goal saw his low drive hit the inside of the post and bounce back into the keeper's hands.

With half an hour to go Luton boss Mike Newell then threw on striker Adrian Forbes as they went all out for attack and within minutes came close to reducing the deficit.

Latching on to a lucky break, Steve Robinson took the ball past Swindon keeper Rhys Evans only to see his goalbound shot headed off the line by Matt Heywood.

That just about summed up Luton's luck in front of goal and with the clock ticking down centre-back Boyce provided the inspiration embarking of a series of lung-busting runs which resulted in Steve Howard testing Evans.

Fallon had another chance to claim his treble but shot tamely at Hyldgaard, while Boyce fittingly had Luton's last chance, though his goalbound header was cleared off the line.
