Luton 3-1 Aston Villa- Match Report

Fourth division Luton dump Aston Villa out of EFL Cup

Luton produced an EFL Cup upset by knocking out Sky Bet Championship side Aston Villa with a fully deserved 3-1 win at Kenilworth Road.

The visitors, who have not won a game in any competition since February 6, took the lead through Jordan Ayew, but their League Two opponents hit back to stun the former Premier League side.

Villa dominated the opening 20 minutes and were denied by the bar early on when Nathan Baker's cross was sliced goalwards by Town defender Glen Rea.

Jack Grealish hit the post too, before Villa took the lead on 13 minutes, Ayew spinning in the box and finding the bottom corner.

Hatters keeper Christian Walton saved Grealish's free-kick, but Luton found their groove and were level in the 36th minute following a lovely move as Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu slid in Jake Gray, who lifted his shot over the advancing Mark Bunn.

After the break, Hylton and Marriott both went close, as did visiting substitute Rudy Gestede with Johnny Mullins clearing off the line, before Luton went ahead in the 53rd minute, Cameron McGeehan tapping home from close range.

Villa almost levelled on the hour mark, a cross being deflected against the bar, but they trailed 3-1 from the 66th minute as centre-back Jores Okore comically put the ball through his own net.
