Player of the Month for October

Last updated : 20 November 2007 By Peter Bulkeley
October wasn't a particularly good month for Kevin Blackwell's men, although to be honest it was a lot better than November has been so far. The month started with the first away point of the season, in a 0-0 draw against Yeovil Town which, judging by the quantity of chances the team had, wasn't really good enough, and the team maybe should have won. The next home fixture was a disappointment as well. An awful first half at home to Doncaster saw Luton go into the break 1-0 down and very lucky not to be losing by more. Furlong came to the rescue in the second half and salvaged a disappointing draw for Kevin Blackwell. The month got worse in the Mickey Mouse Trophy, as Luton squandered a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 at Gillingham and crash out of the pointless cup. However, the team bounced back to hit four past Northampton in front of the TV cameras at Kenilworth Road, before a dismal away showing against Crewe Alexandra saw the team lose 2-0. A home win against Nottingham Forest was followed by a valiant effort at home to Everton in the League Cup, with a Tim Cahill goal in extra time the only thing that separated Luton from the Premiership team. So a disappointing start to a month quickly changed into an optimistic hope for November, which quickly vanished.

It was quite difficult to find five players that played well in October,
particularly considering that I only actually attended one game that month. However, with help from match reports and pure guesswork, I have come up with the following five players:

1. Jaroslaw Fojut - The young Polish defender has forced himself into the first team, breaking up the ineffective Chris Perry and Chris Coyne defensive partnership, and has looked very solid at the back, in fact he has been the only consistently solid part of the defence really so far this season. One of the best signings Blackwell has made, he has recently had his loan extended until the end of the season, and Jaroslaw looks like a good prospect for the future.

2. Paul Furlong - Furlong has once again proved his worth to the team in
October by adding four goals to his tally for the season, even if two of those were in the Mickey Mouse Trophy. His work-rate and stamina hasn't dropped either, and last month's winner of this award has been missed in recent weeks as he recovers from an injury. We don't really look like scoring when he is missing.

3. Darren Currie - Only really in this vote because of his goal against Northampton Town, which was a rare bit of quality in a lacklustre month by all accounts. Despite having no pace, Currie is still able to pull off some moments of skill that set him apart from a lot of players in the team, which was shown with his goal in the Northampton game.

4. Matthew Spring - Consistently running in the centre of midfield, with an amazing work-rate. Matthew Spring hasn't been quite as good as he was in the first couple of months, but nevertheless he has tried to hold the midfield together in the matches he has played in this month and scored three penalties in addition.

5. Ahmet Brkovic - Scored a superb goal at Elland Road this month, and also played his part in a goal at Gillingham in the Mickey Mouse Trophy
earlier this month. The Croatian Sensation hasn't actually played much this month, but has still done about as much as other players in the midfield this month, and is only really in here as a protest to his treatment by the staff at Luton. This Croatian genius certainly deserves a lot more respect, and he also deserves a chance - contrary to what people at the club say, he hasn't been given a chance.
