January player of the month?

Last updated : 08 February 2007 By Peter Bulkeley
January saw Luton make seemingly little progress, with two key players sold and no wins in the league being the downside to the month. The first match wasn't too bad - a 0-0 draw at home to Cardiff City wasn't a brilliant result but could have been worse. The next match was the away FA Cup match against QPR, which Luton drew 2-2 without Carlos Edwards, who had been sold for about £1.4million to Sunderland. Rowan Vine was next out for a deal worth £2.5million by the time Luton visited West Brom. A good performance wasn't reflected in the scoreline, with two late goals from Kevin Phillips securing a 3-2 win for Luton. Then it all went downhill. The in-form Warren Feeney got injured in the next match at home to Barnsley and Luton crashed to a lacklustre 2-0 defeat. The next Tuesday's performance in the replay against QPR wasn't much better, but this time QPR were just as bad, and for once Luton got the luck against Rangers, with an own goal ensuring a 1-0 win. Unfortunately, the 4th Round saw Luton crash out at the hands of Blackburn Rovers. This was followed by defeat at the hands of a very very bad Coventry team. So not a good month for Luton, although the signings of Matthew Spring, Drew Talbot and Bjorn Runstrom on loan give some hope.

These players are some of the only ones to come out of January with any credit and are nominated for this month's Player of the Month award. They are:

1) Russell Perrett - With Barnett, Heikkinen and Coyne all picking up injuries, Perrett provided a decent replacement at the back, and despite his age fared ok against the players he was up against.
2) Warren Feeney - Before picking up an injury, Feeney looked very dangerous and found his goalscoring touch. His absence up front left us looking very short of attacking options.
3) David Bell - The solid midfielder had another good month yet again despite the generally poor performance of the midfield.
4) Keith Keane - Called in as an emergency centre-back and defender, Keane excelled himself when called upon (with the exception of the first-half at West Brom). He even managed to score himself a goal, and is on his way to proving his critics (including me) wrong.
