McVeigh signs for Hatters

McVeigh, 29, has signed for two years at Luton, joining Peschisolido and Furlong as new strikers for the coming season. McVeigh started off his career at Tottenham Hotspur, where he made three appearances and managed to score one goal, before he was sold to Norwich City in 2000 for a nominal fee. In his time at Norwich, Paul McVeigh scored 39 goals. His best season was in 2002-03, where he was on the scoresheet 15 times, yet only scored 5 times the following season when Norwich were promoted to the Premiership. When in the Premiership, McVeigh had a much less successful time, playing very few matches and scoring only once, in an early season defeat at Old Trafford. Back in the Championship, McVeigh scored 8 goals the next season, and also appeared for the Canaries against Luton in the 4-2 victory for us at Kenilworth Road. Unfortunately for McVeigh, he failed to score last season at all for Norwich, his only contribution being a red card in a home win against Cardiff City. He was sent out on loan to Burnley towards the end of the season, and he scored three times to help Burnley avoid the drop.

Paul McVeigh is 5ft 6 and 10st 5lb, and is also a Northern Ireland international. He has apparently played 15 times for Northern Ireland, making his debut in 2001, and has failed to score in any of his appearances (reminds me of another Northern Ireland striker we used to have). His signing isn't a bad one, but may be a little disappointing for many Luton fans. With Talbot, Parkin, Peschisolido, Furlong and Andrew already at the club, it could be said that we don't necessarily need another striker at Luton, and in particular we need more strength in other areas of the team. With another signing promised yesterday, many Luton fans were hoping for a central defender to add depth to an area where we have little choice, but instead we've signed another striker. That isn't to say that McVeigh is necessarily a bad signing, he could be a very good player in League One. There is, however, a much more pressing need for a central defender at the moment, and possibly a goalkeeper too. Hopefully McVeigh will prove his worth tomorrow.
