Marlon to Oldham on loan

Last updated : 18 October 2007 By Peter Bulkeley
Marlon has joined Oldham on loan because of injuries to the Latics' first choice goalkeepers Les Pogliacomi and Mark Crossley. Marlon has been forced down the pecking order after the arrival of David Forde on loan last month, and Ben Alnwick this month, plus the rise of young goalkeeper Dean Brill. With Blackwell's annoying habit of not choosing a goalkeeper on the bench, Beresford hasn't even made the first-team squad this season, so a loan move is probably a good one for all parties concerned.

Marlon originally joined Luton on a short-term deal in 2003, when we had the transfer embargo. He played 16 games for us in about three months, which

helped us to move up the league and into the play-off positions after good form from the experienced keeper. However, he eventually moved on to Barnsley at the end of his spell, and finished off the season at Oakwell. By the start of the next season he was back, though, after being the most notable of Mike Newell's summer signings. Marlon proved to be in inspirational form that season, form which saw him named in the PFA Team of the Year for that season, and was a key part in the team winning the league that season. His first season back in the Championship saw him perform well again, but last season was more of a struggle for Marlon, as his form dropped as Luton suffered relegation back into League One. This loss in form saw him dropped from the team at the end of last season, and the start of this season. Hopefully, he can rebuild his career at Oldham on loan, although at 38 years old, he will be nearing the end of his playing career. Hopefully, he still has a few more years left in him. Good luck at Oldham Marlon.
