Luton sign eight players

Last updated : 08 August 2008 By Peter Bulkeley
Earlier on today, numerous websites announced that Luton had signed two players from Norwich City on season long loans, Chris Martin, a 19 year old forward, and Michael Spillane, a 19 year old midfielder. However, the official website has only confirmed Martin out of these two players, so perhaps the signing of Spillane has yet to be confirmed.

Out of the other seven, the one that Luton fans already knew about was former captain Kevin Nicholls. The signing of Nicholls was announced at the Brighton friendly, although subject to agreement by the Football League. None of the other signings will come as a great surprise to Luton fans either, as most were on trial with the club and played many of the pre-season friendlies. Below are a list of the other signings confirmed, and a few details about the players.

Claude Gnapka - 25 years old, played in 32 matches for Peterborough last season at right-back as Posh gained promotion from League Two. He is described as having a strong tackle and notorious pace. Unlike most of Blackie's signings, he's a tall lad as well.

George Pilkington - 26 years old, 6ft centre-back who used to be club captain of Port Vale. He made over 250 appearances for Vale and was almost ever present last season.

Asa Hall - 21 years old, has played for Shrewsbury Town and Boston United on loan and was offered a permanent deal by Shrewsbury last season. Can apparently play either in midfield or defence.

Rossi Jarvis - 20 years old, was the youngest player ever to play in the Norwich reserve team, but didn't seem to make much of an impact there. Can play in the centre or the right of defence and midfield apparently. Just a little under 6ft and has made appearances for England U19's.

Ian Roper - 31 year old former Walsall central defender, very highly thought of at The Saddlers, and some Walsall fans I know were sorry to see him released. Played 13 seasons at Walsall, making over 300 appearances. He is a giant, but quite slow. Maybe not so much of a problem in League Two, as long as someone else at the back has pace anyway.

Tristan Plummer - 18 years old, on loan from Bristol City. My trusted source has no information on him, (Wikipedia has really gone downhill recently), but a search in Google has revealed that he is a 'safe guy' and Arsenal apparently were interested. He's pretty small as well.

That's all I can say about the players at the moment. Being on holiday has meant that I haven't been able to see any players in action in pre-season but hopefully the signs will be good on Saturday. They are already better than last season's signings in that they are reasonably sized and not past it.
