Luton draw Plymouth in League Cup 1st Round

Argyle last played at Kenilworth Road in 2007, earning a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from David Norris and Peter Halmosi, with Stephen O'Leary scoring for Luton. The two sides have met before in the League Cup back in 1992, when the matches were played over two legs in the early rounds. Luton and Plymouth shared a 2-2 in the Kenilworth Road match, and Plymouth won the second leg 3-2.

Luton have an excellent and illustrious history in the League Cup, at least for a League Two team. The Hatters won the competition in 1988, with 2020 investor Steve Foster captaining the side, and came second in 1989 to Nottingham Forest, with current manager Mick Harford scoring in the final of that match. Last season, Luton beat Dagenham & Redbridge, Premiership side Sunderland and Championship side Charlton before losing after extra time to Everton whilst reaching the 4th round. The club were also banned from the competition in 1986-87 thanks to our ban on away fans.

Plymouth's record in the League Cup is much worse - they have only advanced past the 1st Round twice since 1992-93, although both have been during their current stay in the Championship. Argyle's best two performances in the League Cup came in 1965 and 1974, when they reached the semi-finals before being eliminated by Leicester City and Manchester City.
