Latest on Kelvin/Hillier/Howard transfer saga and other news

Last updated : 13 June 2005 By Peter Bulkeley
With the season finished a month ago, usually all of the talk at Luton Town Football Club would be about pre-season preparations or transfer talk. However, with just a few weeks until the fixtures are announced, the only team that the Hatters fans are sure they will be seeing at Kenilworth Road is mighty Rotherham United. No other dates have been confirmed, although there is speculation that the League One champions will be visiting the Nou Camp and the Bernabeu in Spain as part of their preparation.

On the transfer front, things are slightly more lively although some fans are worried about the lack of players arriving at Kenilworth Road. So far, only one new signing (Carlos Edwards on 1st July) has been confirmed. Rowan Vine's future is still unclear. Mike Newell has said that he is unsure about who is in charge at Portsmouth and unsure about what is going on, and the situation is very much in Pompey's hands.

So, that basically sums up the week at Kenilworth Road, although any summary of this week's events wouldn't be complete without another look at Paul Hughes. The midfielder with the silver boots is apparently worrying the Luton backroom staff with his fitness. It must be improving then.
However, the main talking point this week (apart from Lee "Superstar" Mansell's move to Oxford United) has been Steve Howard.Howard's future is just as uncertain as Vine's, although the future doesn't look bright as far as Luton are concerned. The club have offered him a new deal, but the big striker has also been linked with Leeds United, Burnley, Stoke City, Real Madrid and one absurd suggestion has been that Stevo will move to Gillingham. The Priestfield club moved in the opposite direction in the league to Luton, moving down to League One from the Championship. If Stevo was to move down to Priestfield, then it would confirm that him and his agent would be just after the money that they could get, although surely Leeds and Real Madrid could offer him more money than Gillingham. A recent debate amongst Luton fans has questioned the suitablilty of Stevo in the Hatters' squad, with a few already labelling him as "overrated", "fat", "useless" and as a "carthorse". Personally, I'll be waiting until his future has been decided before deciding whether to insult him.

Other ex-Town players in the news recently include Kelvin Davis, Ian Hillier and Carlos Edwards. Kelvin's move to Premiership Sunderland looks very much on, and rumour has it that he will undergo a medical today. Kelvin was also a target for West Ham, although West Ham are now chasing ex-Man United duo Fabien Barthez and Roy Carroll. Who can blame them? Who needs a consistent, solid goalkeeper in the side when you can have two dodgy, fumbling, blundering fools? Just ask Joe Kinnear - his signings of Carl Emberson and Mark Ovendale have provided Town fans with plenty of laughs. We weren't laughing at the time, of course, but we can now look back and laugh.

Ian Hillier will also undergo a medical in Munich today, your editor can exclusively confirm. Bayern Munchen have fought off clubs such as Inter Milan, AS Roma, Panathinaikos and Cwmbran Town to sign the Welsh full-back, and the move will be confirmed today. You read it here first.

Carlos Edwards will miss much of the Hatters' pre-season campaign due to him being on international duty for Trinidad and Tobago. This news came as quite a shock to everyone throughout Luton and to those of us who support Luton but don't live there. The revelation's that Luton Town Football Club has a pre-season campaign has come as an unexpected shock, and we can only hope that more details are announced by the club soon. Fans are also expecting an update on how the grass has grown on the Kenilworth Road pitch since the last update.

So, that pretty much brings you up-to-date with the news at Kenilworth Road, although no self-respecting news summary would be complete without a mention of Paul Hughes, also dubbed "The Bald Maradona" by a small section of Luton fans. The midfielder's fitness is apparently worrying the backroom staff at Luton. It must be improving then.
