Coyne, who is 29 years old, will go straight into the Colchester United squad for the match against Bristol City. Colchester have broken their transfer record to sign Coyne, with the fee thought to be £350,000. The move leaves Luton extremely short of central defenders, with just Chris Perry a recognised centre-back and with Keith Keane and Richard Jackson able to play in that position. The Australian centre-back had made 25 appearances for Luton this season, scoring the one goal in the FA Cup 1st Round Replay against Brentford. Coyne ended up playing 252 matches for Luton in total, scoring 17 goals, including crucial goals at Wrexham, Hartlepool and Bristol City that were instrumental in the 2004-05 league title win. His contribution to the team has been immeasurable since he joined the club in September 2001, and a full profile of him and his achievements with the team will be published later. In the meantime, good luck to Coyne in his time at Colchester, and thanks for his superb efforts with the club over the last six years.

Young midfielder David Edwards has also left the club in the last few hours. Edwards, who is 21 and a full international for Wales, joins former Luton man Kevin Foley in the Black Country at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite often not being able to shoot straight, Edwards gave the midfield a lot of energy, and whilst the final product was not often there with Edwards, he always showed he had the potential to become a good player, giving the midfield a lot of energy alongside Matthew Spring. Edwards only played 26 matches for Luton, scoring four goals, but had already become a popular figure at Luton. Wolves have signed him for £675,000, and it is believed that Nottingham Forest had been interested in Edwards as well. The sale is less crucial than the sale of Coyne, as we have plenty of midfielders still, but it means that Don Hutchison may be called into the team anytime soon. Good luck to Edwards for the rest of your career, and thanks for your efforts at the club.
