Blackwell gets a Currie

Currie is a 32-year old midfielder, thought to be a winger, who is very experienced and has played for a number of different clubs in his career. He started as a trainee at West Ham, and after loan spells at Leyton Orient and Shrewsbury, he was signed by the Shrews. He has worked his way up the divisions from there, with him going to Plymouth, Barnet, Wycombe, Brighton, Ipswich, Coventry and Derby, with Currie going to Coventry and Derby on loan. After working his way from Gay Meadow to Portman Road, Pride Park and the Ricoh Arena, he is very much working his way down again with the facilities at Kenilworth Road. He joins David Edwards and Alan Goodall from Shrewsbury and Rochdale, with more expected to follow.

Currie has also apparently had a trial with LA Galaxy, but was turned down, presumably because they had thrown all of their money at David Beckham already. He has made almost 600 appearances in professional football, scoring 69 goals in the process, so he is clearly a player with experience in abundance. Along with Brkovic, Robinson and Underwood, he adds experience to the midfield, and Blackwell has already said that part of his job will be to help the younger players, as well as those already in the first team such as Bell, Morgan, Emanuel and Edwards. After the signings of two relatively young players, it is good to see Blackwell delivering his promise of signing an experienced player, who can add a lot to the team. Hopefully he will be able to provide a lot to the team in his two year spell with Luton, although we won't know for sure until the start of the season, of course. The move has also delighted many local journalists and website editors, who can now spend their time thinking up various puns on his surname (like the pathetic one for this article). This is clearly more difficult to do when most Luton players have names like Boyd, Talbot, Spring and Beresford, which are respectable names but not really that interesting.

Blackwell is also expected to sign former Derby and West Brom striker Paul Peschisolido in the next few days. There have also been various rumours circulating about the possible departure of Kevin Foley to West Brom as well. However, Albion have just signed a defender today for a very small price, so they may be put off by Foley's inflated price tag.
