Blackett becomes next summer signing

Last updated : 22 July 2009 By Peter Bulkeley
Blackett, who was announced today on the official website, has signed a two-year deal with Luton and is likely to play in the next friendly on Saturday against a Peterborough United XI. Blackett is 26 years old and can play at either centre-back or left-back, so we won't be short of centre-backs next season at least if that is the case, although Blackett is more likely to feature in the side as a left-back, where Town have less cover with just Howells and possibly Lewis Emanuel.

Shane was born in Luton and started his career at Dunstable Town before moving to Arlesey Town, Dagenham and Redbridge and finally Peterborough United. He played a part in the Dagenham team that won promotion from the Conference in the 2006-07 season, although Blackett was sold to Peterborough in the January transfer window of that season. His time at Peterborough was injury plagued, nevertheless Shane played 35 times for Peterborough in two seasons, playing a small part in Posh's back to back promotions in the process. He joins former Posh players Alan White, Mark Tyler, Liam Hatch, Adam Newton and Claude Gnakpa at the club. In other news. So instead of being Norwich's reserve team, we seem to have become Peterborough's now.

The move for the 6 foot 3 defender has a slightly bizarre twist to it. Although Blackett's contract was cancelled by mutual consent on Tuesday afternoon, it turns out that all of the proceeds from our friendly against Peterborough will go towards the transfer fee, which is a very unique move. Another interesting thing (well, slightly interesting) about Blackett is that he is another player with experience of getting promoted from this division, along with fellow summer signings Andy Burgess and Liam Hatch, who are also local teams. Hopefully the trend can be replicated this season.
